LPG cylinder installation regulations

Regulations specify appropriate locations and clearances in the placement of gas cylinders. Distances from ignition sources, wall openings, and below-ground spaces, such as drains or pits, are all specified, so you can safely enjoy clean burning LPG.

Regulations for home gas installations

Liquified petroleum gas (LPG) can be used alongside electricity, or independent of electricity, and LPG is the right alternative in areas not served by natural gas.

Regardless of the setup, LPG cylinders must be placed in well-ventilated locations and on a solid base. Here are seven installation tips for 45kg, 90kg, and 210kg home LPG cylinders:

  1. Ensure the gas cylinder installation is upright and stable. Gas cylinders are often best situated on a solid concrete pad above ground level where water won't accumulate.
  2. Ensure the gas cylinders are fixed in position and won't topple over and create a gas leak. Keeping the gas cylinder upright will ensure the pressure relief valve functions correctly.
  3. Keep the gas cylinder installation away from ignition sources or combustible materials. These include electrical switches, power points, air conditioning, compressors, pumps, lights, and sensors.
  4. Ensure the gas cylinder installation should be in a well-ventilated space. It cannot be in an enclosure, alcove, under a building, or stairway.
  5. Keep the gas cylinder installation away from pits and drains. LPG is heavier than air, so to avoid the potential for gas accumulation, gas cylinder installation cannot be near a hole in the earth.
  6. The gas cylinder installation should not be near window or wall openings. Avoid placing the installation near doors and air vents to avoid the buildup of gas in enclosed spaces.
  7. Ensure your installation point provides easy access during gas cylinder delivery and replacement and meets Australian Standards.

LPG exchange delivery guidelines

Here are some simple guidelines to help you get started:

LPG truck fill guidelines

Line of sight for a tanker LPG delivery means the delivery driver has a clear line of sight between the gas installation and the tanker while he is filling your cylinders.

The gas installation also needs to be within the reach of the tanker's hose if the cylinders or tanks are to be filled on-site by a tanker. Our tankers have a 25m hose length.

For practical access, design the gas installation in a straight line measurement from the delivery truck cylinder offloading area.

For more information regarding safe placement and installation of gas cylinders, see this document.

How to check your gas cylinder level

There are a few ways to check your gas cylinder level:

  • Check the gas cylinder level by pouring hot water down one side of the gas cylinder. Run your hand along the gas cylinder to feel for a temperature change. The point where the temperature changes from hot to cold indicates the level of gas.
  • Check the gas cylinder level by weighing the gas cylinder. Weigh the gas cylinder and subtract the tare weight from the weight when full. A 9kg gas cylinder weighs roughly 18kg when full. A 45kg gas cylinder weighs roughly 78kg when full.
  • Check the gas cylinder level by using a gas cylinder level indicator. A gas cylinder level indicator is a magnetic strip that attaches itself to the outside of the gas cylinder. The indicator changes colour as the gas level changes.
  • Check the gas cylinder gauge (if fitted). Note that due to legal requirements, gas cylinders cannot exceed 80% of their usable capacity.

How do I check for leaks?

If you are not confident in your ability to safely perform this check, please contact our office at (03) 5874 2246.

What You Need:

  • Soap and water mixture
  • A sponge or cloth
  • A spray bottle (optional)

Steps to Check for Gas Leaks:

  1. Ensure proper ventilation: Open windows and doors to ensure adequate ventilation in the area where you will be checking for gas leaks.
  2. Prepare the soapy water solution: Mix equal parts of soap and water to create a soapy water solution. You can use a spray bottle to apply the solution or apply it with a sponge or cloth.
  3. Turn off appliances and pilot lights: Make sure all gas appliances, stoves, and pilot lights are turned off.
  4. Check gas connections: Carefully inspect all gas connections, including pipes, fittings, valves, and hoses, for any signs of damage, wear, or loose connections.
  5. Apply the soapy water solution: Apply the soapy water solution to the gas connections using a spray bottle, sponge, or cloth.
  6. Observe for bubbles: Watch closely for any bubbles forming around the gas connections. If bubbles appear, it indicates a gas leak.
  7. Take immediate action if a gas leak is detected: If you detect a gas leak, take immediate action by turning off the gas supply at the main valve located on top of your cylinder(s), opening windows and doors to ventilate the area, and contacting our office on (03) 5874 2246 or emergency services (if the leak does not stop after shutting the valve) for assistance.

Note: It's important to follow safety precautions and exercise caution when checking for gas leaks. If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing the check yourself, it is recommended to contact a qualified professional.

Always refer to the specific instructions and guidelines provided by gas safety authorities or your local gas provider for accurate and up to date information on checking for gas leaks.

⚠️ NEVER use a lighter or other naked flame to check for gas leaks. ⚠️
